Get in Touch with Your Artistic Self with Custom Laminations

MPI patients who want to stand out from the crowd have even more options to choose from when they get a new prosthesis. Some of our patients prefer not to cover their prosthesis, while others want it to match as closely as possible their sound leg or arm. But more and more, we are seeing a demand for custom laminations – the art of taking a design, color, pattern, or logo, and incorporating it into the prosthesis itself.

We have always taken pride in being able to custom fabricate every prosthesis we provide in-house. Now we have perfected custom laminations, which we provide at no cost to you when you are getting a new prosthesis. Our technicians can laminate your prosthesis to match the color of your limb. Many patients prefer this as it often make the prosthetic limb indistinguishable to casual observation. But there are others who prefer a bolder style.

Favorites tend toward the American flag, Armed Services insignias, camo, and action sports such as NASCAR, football, or motorcycles. Popular with our pediatric patients are designs that feature animated movie characters or bright colors. But we can take almost any design you request or provide to us your favorite material, T-shirt, bandana, scarf or patch. Our technicians can use almost any fabric as long as it has some stretch to it and it doesn't bleed. Cotton is a good durable fabric to work with.

Personalizing a prosthesis is both a spirits booster and a conversation starter. Many of our patients – both upper and lower limb loss – find that calling attention to their prosthesis through colorful art work has positive results. Patients say it really feels more like a part of them because they take ownership in how it appears.

For children, it sends a signal that a prosthesis is nothing to hide or be ashamed of. It also builds their confidence about wearing a prosthesis. Whatever your choice, socket laminations let you make a statement or simply have fun.

If you are interested in personalizing your new prosthesis, at no cost to you, contact your MPI prosthetist. We are always here to help you.
